Nasi Kandar Beratur

Nasi Kandar Beratur in Georgetown’d old quarter, next to the 211-year-old Kapitan Keling Mosque, has been one of Penang’s leading purveyors of “Nasi Kandar”, a traditional Indian-Muslim meal which consisted of steamed white rice, served with an array of curried dishes for nearly 70 years. Oftentimes, the “Nasi Kandar”-man will ladle various curry gravies onto your plate of rice itself, resulting in a dish with complex, mind-boggling, tongue-tingling mix of flavors.

Nasi Kandar Beratur has been operating out of this spot (Liqayat Ali Restaurant) since 1943. Firstly, it’s interesting to note that *two* different Nasi Kandar purveyors operate out of this spot – on a shift basis. Other than sharing the same premises and even serving equipment, their kitchen/serving staff and cooking styles are virtually unrelated.

One crew operates from 10am to 9pm. But Nasi Kandar connoisseurs swore by the night-shift crew, which opens for business at 10pm (or, more accurately, around 10.20pm since they take their own sweet time opening the shutters, arrange their trays of pre-cooked curries, wiping the counters, etc.). But come rain or shine, a long queue will start forming in front of the serving counter from 9.30pm each evening.

I was in this evening’s queue – probably bonkers, since I can’t imagine having a curry meal at 11pm – which is probably the time I’d get served since I was like 24th in the queue at 10.10pm! But, I’m on vacation in Penang, and I’m in the mood to do something totally out of character.

There were literally a hundred people sitting around waiting for their food, whilst one of their respective parties would be in the queue to place the order for the rest. I’m doing that for my dinner with my hubby, since I wanted to experience first-hand the ordering process.

Turned out, the servers were super-efficient – one simply points out the meats and vegetables that one wants, and they’d ladle out the requisite amounts of each dish, then pour 4-5 types of curries onto each plate of the rice. The skill of each Nasi Kandar server is in how well he blends together the different curry gravies to form the “perfect mix” and balance of flavors.

For my own plate – I chose a dry beef curry, a spicy chicken curry, chopped spiced cabbage, a curried okra, a hard-boiled egg, and a large piece of fish-roe. My plate of rice was virtually covered by the meats & vegetables and absolutely drenched with curry gravies.

How was the food overall? I must admit that it fell far short of my expectations: the chicken was too dry, the curries were *not* piquant enough for my taste. I’d have better Nasi Kandar elsewhere in Penang but, there’s no beating the atmosphere here – that near-midnight queue of dozens of people for a plate of spicy curry. Precious!

Mr Teppanyaki @ Jusco Equine

Hi Korang,

Dengar nama pun dah tau dah, Teppanyaki ni adalah makanan Jepun.

Ktorg kalau pi area equine ni, memang selalu akan pi makan kat sini. Senang, mudah dan cepat.

Korang kalau masuk kedai ni jangan terperanjat pulak. Actually tempat duduk makan kat sini berbentuk kaunter.
Sebab apa aku cakap cepat?

Makan plak, aku order Chicken Teppanyaki . Makan kena panas-panas baru terangkat.

Lelain semua sama cam aku punya but ayam tu di ganti dengan daging. Rasa daging tu tak delah kering sangat, ada lagi juicy taste. hubby aku makan daging.

Aku pernah try kat outlet tempat lain but rasanya tak sama dan tak best macam kat equine ni. Walaupun tukang masaknya bangla but tastenya a bit different la.
Kira ni macam the cheapest one. Kalau nak belajar-belajar makan makanan jepun, meh try makan kat sini dulu tau.

Kari Kepala Ikan Kampung Pandan

Siapa lagi yg suka benor makan gulai kari kalau bukan buah hati terchenta, mr suami. Laju je beliau nak bawa daku makan2 di sini sementelaah haritu kami berurusan di area Desa Pandan.

Besar juga tapak restoran kari kepala ikan nih. ada 2 tingkat. tingkat bawah ruang terbuka manakala di tingkat atas ruang ber aircond. Kalu kereta tak muat nak parking dlm kawasan restoran, mereka ada sediakan ruang parking khas di seberang jln mengadap restoran.

banyak lauk-pauk yg tersedia di sini. portion dia pun bersaiz besar-besar. udang besar, sotong besar, ketam pun besar. (harga pun pasti besar)

selain lauk-pauk berkuah, ada juga lauk jenis goreng2 spti ayam goreng rempah, ketam goreng & sotong salut tepung. yg pasti semuanya bersaiz besar

Yeahhh.. wajib ambik !. apa barang pegi sini kalau tak pekena kari kepala ikan. Inilah favorite mr suami. Asal ada kari, selera beliau semakin menjadi-jadi. Tetapi pada daku gulai kaari nih biasa2 saje mungkin daku lebih suka gulai kari yg ala-ala kemelayuan. Kalau korang peminat kari mamak, daku rasa ini antara gulai kari yg best kot !.   Habis ke makan  kepala ikan tuh?… Mungkin kalau tengok saiz kepala ikan yang dihidangkan korang rasa ia terlalu besar, tapi percayalah, bila dah makan, tak terasa ikan tu dah lunyai korang kerjakan

frankly speaking, kalau korang tanya daku, hanya 3/5 bintang yg dapat daku berikan utk makan2 di sini. Yg menarik krn lauk dia sangat banyak, rambang mata semasa nak memilih. Layanan pun sangat pantas (standard kedai mamak). Masa pegi makan time lunch memang ramai umat manusia berpusu ke sini. Mungkin sedap kot tapi pada daku biasa2 jer.

Dari segi harga? ermmm, kalau bajet kecil daku nasihatkan korang tak payah ambil lauk2 lain, cukuplah dengan kepala ikan saja, tapi kalau still nak udang besar, sotong, ketam, ayam dan sebagainya, confirm bil korang akan cecah tiga angka. Utk makluman korang, sepinggan kari kepala ikan kat atas ni harganya sekitar RM 50 ++  !!! Jadi boleh anggarlah jika korang ambil menu2 sampingan lain….
